MSB: Mitt förråd
Fictional case in connection with EGGS, part of Sopra Steria. The projects' main objective is to increase the preparedness of the Swedish population in emergency situations including disasters caused by climate change, pandemics and geopolitical conflicts. The client requested us to find and implement the best digital solution to reach as many people living in Sweden as possible and to give them the necessary tools and knowledge to be self-sufficient for a week in the face of a crisis.
Summary
In 2024, MSB the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency re-released their yellow pamphlet “Om krisen eller kriget kommer” with new guidelines to help people “learn how to prepare for, and act, in case of crisis or war”.

It is stated in the brochure that each household should do their best to prepare enough food and water to last them a week at the least in order to lessen the burden on the military as everyone is “part of Sweden’s overall emergency preparedness.”

Over the last few years however, there has been a push to transition to a more digital world which no organisation is exempt from, and so the brief we received bade us to research, find and develop a cost effective digital solution in order to help MSB complete their goal of reaching out to every person living in Sweden and help them develop a strategy to be more self sufficient in times of crisis.
Research
As a starting point in the process we began looking at the work MSB had already done on the subject, including the documentation and surveys they have up on their website as well as what user journeys they have implemented. The yellow pamphlet that MSB created and distributed physically and digitally, is their main way to get people involved. We also looked at MSBs equivalents in other countries to get more ideas about what was feasible and what did not work.

From there we started building a list of questions we needed answers to in order to better understand the needs of our average user. This list of questions was then further developed into a survey for quantitative data and interviews for qualitative data.

The survey received 57 answers and allowed us to better understand our main demographic and quantify the amount of knowledge most people possessed today. We also learned more about how people took in information in this digital climate and about their general challenges with storing food, water and basic necessities. The 10 interviews we conducted allowed us to go more in depth about peoples specific needs and wishes from our service as well as their pain points and their worries.
Survey and Interview data
From our survey and interviews of which you can see the highlights below, we noticed that most people today used their phones to keep up to date on the news, gain information and get engaged in their communities. Peoples main problems with emergency planning was their lack of knowledge, lack of perceived space, and financial difficulties. People also felt that there wasn't any urgent need to start saving food until they had a concrete emergency they were planning for.

To try to combat these problems we set about creating a digital app to help people track the food and water they have at home, get informed about the latest information MSB has released, as well as interact with their neighbours and family members to create a more cohesive neighbourhood and promote friendliness and cooperation.

Our moto is to educate, facilitate and motivate people to become more self sufficient and confident in their abilities to survive in times of crisis.
Our hope with this service is to guide people to be more engaged in their own safety during emergencies, which would also help Sweden as a whole to be more prepared to better weather the storm. To achieve that we took the results of our research and created this app we called “Mitt förråd”, which features several functions that will help our users achieve their goals. After several iterations and 2 rounds of user testing we were able to get to this prototype.

One thing we were careful with was to focus on the feelings of safety instead of danger. And while we wanted the language to be a bit informal to attract younger generations which have less knowledge and life experience, we still worked on keeping our copywriting clean as our demographic was the whole population of Sweden. In a nutshell we worked on designing an app that is enjoyable and easy to use, while also treating the subject matter with the appropriate gravity it deserves.

The prototype itself is divided into 5 categories which you can access through the navigation bar after going through the sign up or login menu. These 5 categories are the main menu with quick links to important information. The social forums where you can create groups with family members and people who live nearby to promote cooperation. My storage which helps you store food and water as well as keep track of what you already have. Media to help build knowledge through informational documentaries and articles and lastly, my pages for profile settings, personal information and downloaded content.
